Beach ground is its own job: sandy, wet and salted. The drive is built with drainage first, and a seal coat every few years keeps it from greying out and cracking.

Wet ground comes first.

Down here the land is flat coastal plain, the water table sits close to the surface, and the ground stays wet longer than people expect after a storm. Pave over that without digging the soft material out and the new surface dishes and cracks inside a couple of winters, so the time goes in below the asphalt before any goes on top.

In the older parts of Berlin the drives are short, the gates are narrow and the neighbors are close, so smaller equipment comes on purpose and the plan for getting material in and old surface out is made before the first truck arrives. Out past town it flips: long lanes, open fields and wide shoulders, with the falls set so the water leaves the lane.

What we lay down here.

Driveway paving for older homes with a drive patched too many times, and for newer places with a long approach that was never done properly. Resurfacing where the base is still sound under a surface that has gone gray: a new wearing course over the top for a fraction of a rebuild, checked first, because it only works when what is underneath has not failed. Parking lots for rentals, condos and businesses, built heavier where trucks turn. And sealcoating, usually every few years, to keep sun and salt air off the binder.

Beach questions, answered straight.

Do you work in Ocean City?

Yes, and in Berlin and Ocean Pines. Worcester County is part of our regular ground.

What about salt air and sandy ground?

Near the water the ground is sandy, the water table is high and the air carries salt. Drainage comes first, and a regular seal coat keeps water out of the small cracks.

Can you do a rental or a condo lot between tenants?

Call with the dates. Lots are phased section by section so the property can stay open.

How long does a new asphalt driveway take?

Most homes are a one or two day job once the crew is on site, longer where there is heavy base repair or drainage work. Weather moves it, because asphalt never goes down on wet or frozen ground.

Do you pave commercial lots in Ocean City and Berlin?

Yes: shops, offices, churches, rentals and small business parks. Lots get a heavier build than driveways because of truck traffic, and the work is phased so the business keeps trading.

Can you get equipment into a narrow town driveway?

Usually, yes. Access is checked first and smaller equipment comes when the street or the gate needs it. If a site cannot be worked safely, you hear that up front.

Does wet ground near Berlin cause driveway problems?

It is the single biggest cause of failure down here. The water table sits close to the surface, so the soft material is dug out and the falls are set first, instead of paving over ground that holds water after every storm.

Can you resurface my driveway instead of replacing it?

Often, if the base is still sound. A new wearing course over the top costs a fraction of a rebuild. The drive is dug and checked first, because resurfacing only works when what is underneath has not failed.

Is it the same crew as at home?

Yes. One family crew with its own equipment, out of the yard in Federalsburg, does every job, and you talk to Bob.
